The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Stephen B. Thacker Fund at the CDC Foundation. Stephen B. Thacker, MD, MSc, ASG/RADM (Ret.), USPHS, contributed a legacy of extraordinary leadership to CDC and unyielding dedication and contributions to the field of epidemiology and to public health science. This fund honors Dr. Thacker's life and service to public health as well as his passion for the Epidemic Intelligence Service.

Your gift will help support CDC’s Disease Detective Camps for children.  CDC Museum Disease Detective Camp (DDC) is an interdisciplinary educational program organized by the CDC Museum. DDC reflects the museum’s mission of educating the public about CDC’s work. This academic day camp is held at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Admission is open to high-school students during the summer before their junior or senior years. Over the course of five days, campers are immersed in the diverse field of public health. You can learn more about these camps at https://www.cdc.gov/museum/camp/detective/index.htm

Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library

The Stephen B. Thacker CDC Library (CDC Library) mission is to advance science, public health, and safety through information. The library provides a full range of information services and products in support of public health research, policy, and action. Through the headquarters library in Atlanta and its four branches, CDC Library serves CDC employees across the nation as well as those located internationally.

The SBT Fund also supports special projects on an as-needed basis for the library.

Projects have included:

  • Rare Book Case: On October 9, 2015, the CDC unveiled a custom rare bookcase at the Stephen B. Thacker library.  This was made possible through a donation from the Thacker Family. The books displayed will be rotated periodically with various titles. The hope is that the prominent display of these books and the diversity of topics will stimulate others to pursue their own scientific inquiries as a living tribute to Dr. Thacker.

  • Special Collection Book Purchases

  • Rare Book Restorations

  • Purchase of Public Health Children’s Books for use in teaching and inspiring young minds
